A Message About Our Company History from Ben and Ruth Rabin

When we founded BR Pharma in June 2001, and later formed our US affiliate Pharmarama, Ben’s background as a Pharmacist was key in recognizing the need to supply drugs which were unavailable in the UK to patients who could benefit from them.

Through the exemption under the Medicines Act in the UK, we learned that physicians are able to prescribe a medicine even if it is unavailable in the UK: an unlicensed product can be supplied to meet the special needs of a particular patient where a licensed equivalent does not exist. We gain permission from the regulatory body in the UK to import the medicine for the patient. Our business is highly regulated and we have gained the trust of the various regulatory bodies, through regular inspections of our facilities to enable us to extend the business into other areas.

In the early stage of our development as a company, we began our work with the importation of as sustained release ADHD drug. Now this particular medicine is licensed in the UK, and has been licensed here for well over ten years. The introduction of this sustained release drug has made a significant difference in quality of life for children who can now take their medicine in the morning without the need to take an additional dose during school hours. We are proud of our work in this area and look forward to exploring more opportunities to improve the lives of patients.

Through our work in the importation of ADHD medicine, we built good relationships with consultants, patient self-help groups for ADD/ADHD (attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and pharmacy chain drug stores. In addition we began to supply some hospitals.

Following our success in this arena, our company branched out into another area Ben was eager to explore:  sourcing drugs for clinical trials. We employed Angus Cameron who was instrumental in increasing the company’s sales six fold in one year. We are able to offer an efficient and reliable service in sourcing drugs as well as offering additional services such as translation of leaflets and manufacture of placebos. Today we are a preferred supplier to the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies.

As our scope of business has grown and we have attracted business from “Big Pharma”, our infrastructure has been re-designed for increased efficiency. We have a state-of-the-art storage system, continuous temperature monitoring in the warehouse, a walk-in cold room and a new stock system ensuring continuation of stock availability. Our warehousemen maintain high standards and we continue to receive positive feedback from our auditors.

Today, the increased popularity of the Internet enables patients and their families to educate themselves about various illnesses, and they have become extremely proactive in putting pressure on physicians to prescribe particular drugs. The company’s rapid growth has seen the staff numbers double in the last six months. We are fortunate in attracting a very high calibre of staff and pride ourselves on encouraging staff to exploit their strengths and maximize their potential through advanced study and training.

An exciting recent addition to our team is Tammy Bishop, Vice President of US Business Development for Pharmarama. Tammy will be stewarding relationships with clients in the US, establishing Pharmarama as their single point of contact for services in Named Patient Programs and the sourcing of comparator drugs for clinical trials worldwide.

We have a superior team in place, working together to take the company forward under the leadership of our new Managing Director, Rosemary Bensley, whose guidance we expect to carry us forward into the next stage of growth as our industry continues to expand globally.
